The coat of arms of Porto Alegre was designed by Francisco Bellanca, and the status of the official coat of arms was established by Law No. 1030 of January 22, 1953. In the same year, Mayor Ildo Meneghetti signed Mayoral Decree No. 1947. The coat of arms is divided into three parts. At the top is a red Christian cross on a yellow background, representing the dominant Catholicism in the area. In the middle is the Colonial Gate, built in 1773 by Jose Marcelino de Figueiredo, then a captain of San Pedro. It is a landmark at the entrance of the city, symbolizing that the city is open to all. At the bottom is a ship on a green background, representing the city as a port. The crown above the coat of arms features five towers, symbolizing the city’s status as the state capital, and the topmost red ribbon reads “Leal e Valorosa Cidade de Porto Alegre,” a title bestowed on Porto Alegre in 1841 by Emperor Pedro II of Brazil in recognition of his steadfastness and loyalty to the Brazilian royal family.

Porto Alegre (Portuguese: Porto Alegre) is the capital and largest city of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, and also the southernmost capital city among all Brazilian states. In 1769, Manuel Jorge Gomes de Sepúlveda founded Porto Alegre, using the pseudonym José Marcelino de Figueiredo to hide his identity. In 1772, Portugal signed an act granting Porto Alegre city status. The city is located on the eastern shore of Lake Guaíba, where five rivers converge to form Lagoa dos Patos, a large freshwater lagoon navigable even by the largest ships. This confluence of five rivers has become an important alluvial port and a major industrial and commercial center in Brazil. In recent years, Porto Alegre has hosted the World Social Forum, which was initiated by several non-governmental organizations. The city is famous for being the first city to implement participatory budgeting. In 2006, the 9th World Council of Churches Assembly was held in Porto Alegre.
