Cocktail recipes have always been a focus of “Bartender Illustrated”. Our 2018 article “Index of Various Cocktails” had nearly one million views! Starting from November 2021, we’ve added a new column to introduce the recommended cocktail recipes published by the International Bartenders Association (IBA), hoping to help novice bartenders and cocktail enthusiasts!

We have reached the fifth installment of the IBA (International Bartenders Association) recipe series on contemporary classic cocktails.

Today we’ll discuss several cocktails that are well-known both in China and worldwide, as well as some that may appear simple in terms of ingredients but are very drinkable.

Many enthusiasts in their early stages believe that cocktails with more ingredients taste better, but in reality, adding more ingredients brings higher instability, and what you might get is a cocktail of indeterminate character.

Long Island Ice Tea

This cocktail is considered one of the most well-known cocktails in China. It originated in Long Island, USA, and became popular worldwide in the 1990s.

Although it looks like a cup of tea, it has a high alcohol content, especially since it’s mixed with multiple base spirits. Friends with average alcohol tolerance might get drunk after just one glass.

Recipe

15 ml Gin

15 ml Vodka

20 ml Simple syrup

30 ml Lemon juice

15 ml Tequila

15 ml White rum

15 ml Cointreau

Top with cola

Steps

① Pour all ingredients into a highball glass filled with ice

② Stir gently

③ Garnish with a lemon slice

Mai-Tai

This is a cocktail with a strong tropical style and is very popular, it is said that in the 1940s it almost depleted the world’s rum supply. Its name comes from the Tahitian word maita’i, meaning good or excellent.

Recipe

7.5 ml simple syrup

15 ml orgeat syrup

30 ml fresh lime juice

15 ml orange curaçao

30 ml Jamaican rum

30 ml Martinique rhum agricole

① Pour all ingredients into a shaker and fill with ice

② Shake well and strain into a rocks glass or highball glass

③ Garnish with a pineapple slice, mint leaves, and lime peel

Margarita

This cocktail can almost be considered as the most famous tequila cocktail.

There are many versions of the story about it, but the more credible version is that Margarita is an adaptation of another very popular Mexican cocktail, the Daisy. During the Prohibition era, many Americans crossed the border to Mexico to drink, making it very popular during this period.

Recipe

50 ml Tequila

15 ml fresh lime juice

20 ml Triple Sec orange liqueur

Steps

① Pour all ingredients into a shaker and fill with ice

② Shake well and strain into a chilled cocktail glass

③ Garnish with a half-rim of salt

Mimosa

The Chinese name of this drink is literally translated as Mimosa. It is said to have been created by a bartender at the Ritz Hotel in Paris in 1925. Another version claims that the famous director Alfred Hitchcock invented it in San Francisco in the 1940s.

75 ml fresh orange juice

75 ml Prosecco sparkling wine

Steps

① Pour orange juice into a tall champagne glass

② Slowly pour in the sparkling wine and stir gently

③ Garnish with a slice of lemon peel
